WHAT IS RHODIOLA ROSEA?
Rhodiola Rosea is a traditional Chinese herb that was traditionally used as an anti-fatigue agent. These anti-fatigue proportions are related to stress and ‘burnout’ symptoms. Besides this, Rhodiola is also known to be a potent neuro protector against toxins. In the brain, Rhodiola appears to be highly serotonergic (increases serotonin) and reduces corticosteroids and last but not least, there is evidence that Rhodiola can increase cellular health by up to 20%.
The positive neurological effects come from the interaction Rhodiola has with different enzymes like COMT (Catechol-o-methyltransferase) and MAO enzymes. The longevity benefits are also linked to interaction with different enzymes.
The main compounds found in Rhodiola Rosea are Rosain and Salidrose. Rhodiola Rosea also contains different essential oils but because of the low quantity it is unlikely they play a significant role in the benefits one gets from Rhodiola Rosea.
WHERE DOES IT GROW?
The main commercial source of Rhodiola appears to be Mountain Altai and in the south region of Foothill Altai, mainly in Ust-Kanski, Ust-Koksinski, Charishki regions, located in Central-Asia. It is also common in Northern Europe and Russia at higher altitudes. Vikings in the North of Europe used it to preserve physical robustness and it was also a traditional medicine used in old Chinese culture.
